What does SHBG do in your body?

SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) is a protein that binds to the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen in your blood. It controls how much of these hormones is actually available for your body to use. Low SHBG can mean more testosterone is free and active, while high SHBG can bind too much.

What's included in Maybe Baby's hormone test?

Our test measures SHBG along with up to 11 other hormones for a complete picture of your hormonal health.

Apart from a slightly scary prick, the whole Maybe Baby experience was positive! The results were clear and easy to understand. The wait felt a bit long for me due to weekends and holidays, so it was also appreciated when you informed me about the delay.

Jessica

Good instructions on how to perform the test, nice to have both a summary and more detailed information about the different parts of the results.

Molly

The most wonderful treatment and I still have great contact with you. So incredibly grateful for what you do. So happy that I got to experience the wonderful thing you've created.

Hormonal Balance

SHBG Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin

Think of SHBG as the transporter - it carries hormones in the blood and determines how much free testosterone is available to your body.

What does it do?

SHBG is produced in the liver and binds to testosterone and estrogen in the blood. Hormones bound to SHBG are inactive - only the free, unbound hormones can affect your cells. So the SHBG level determines how much of your sex hormones are actually available.

Why does it matter?

SHBG is an important piece for understanding your true hormonal balance. Low SHBG, often seen with PCOS, can lead to more free testosterone and symptoms like acne and increased hair growth. High SHBG can cause symptoms related to low free hormone levels.

Reference range: SHBG in women: 18-144 nmol/L. Levels are influenced by hormonal contraceptives, weight, and thyroid function, among other things.
